In an innovative approach to utilizing funds recovered from criminal activities, Devon & Cornwall Police in South Devon are channelling seized money back into the community, supporting local initiatives that foster positive growth and development. A recent beneficiary of this forward-thinking strategy is the Newton Abbot Under 10s rugby group, which received a £300 grant to purchase a new gazebo.
This gazebo will serve multiple purposes for the team, providing not only shelter from the unpredictable Devon weather but also a safe haven for the young players during matches throughout the region. The investment is more than a mere financial contribution; it's a tangible symbol of the police's commitment to nurturing community well-being and youth development through sports.
Inspector James Johnson, the head of the Newton Abbot neighbourhood policing team, emphasized the dual benefits of supporting local sports clubs like Newton Abbot's rugby group. He highlighted the club's significant role in offering young individuals a platform to pursue their sporting passions while simultaneously instilling vital life skills in an engaging and informal environment. With over 300 youths aged between 5 to 18 participating, the club stands out for its extensive reach and the positive influence it wields on the community's younger generation.
The grant is part of a broader initiative by police teams in South Devon to redistribute funds acquired through criminal forfeitures to various community projects, ranging from local food banks to volunteer training programs. This strategy not only weakens the financial foundation of criminal enterprises but also reinforces the societal fabric by supporting endeavours that contribute to the public good.
Matt Pomeroy, coach of the Newton Abbot U10s, expressed profound gratitude towards Devon & Cornwall Police for their generous contribution. The new gazebo, according to Pomeroy, will be a significant asset for the team, enhancing their match-day experiences by ensuring they remain dry and comfortable, regardless of the weather. This improvement, he believes, will allow the young athletes to focus on delivering their best performances on the rugby field.
As Devon & Cornwall Police look ahead to 2024, they remain committed to extending their support to more worthwhile causes within the community, reinforcing their role not just as enforcers of the law but as active contributors to societal well-being. This initiative underscores a powerful message: assets seized from criminal activities can be transformed into tools for community enhancement, turning the proceeds of crime into opportunities for positive change.
