In a heartwarming act of solidarity, nine-year-old Nico Benson from Cullompton has taken a significant step to support his rugby hero, Aidon Davis, who is currently battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Davis, a renowned back rower for the Exeter Chiefs, shared his diagnosis last month, prompting the young rugby enthusiast to take action.

Nico, a fervent Exeter Chiefs supporter and a pupil at St Andrew's Primary School, decided to part with his cherished mullet to raise funds for Rugby Against Cancer, an organization dedicated to supporting rugby players diagnosed with the disease. Setting an initial goal of £1,000, Nico's campaign swiftly surpassed expectations, amassing over £1,300.

The fundraising initiative reached a poignant moment on Friday, January 19, at Sandy Park, the home of the Exeter Chiefs. In an emotional exchange, Nico had his hair shaved off by Davis, symbolizing their shared journey and fight against cancer. The gesture of support didn't end there; Nico also took the clippers to Davis's hair, further strengthening their bond.

Speaking on his JustGiving page, Nico expressed his motivation, stating, "Rugby is my life, and one of my favourite rugby players has got cancer. So, if you could support me to shave off my mullet, which I love, that would be awesome." He emphasized his connection with Davis, highlighting how the player had inspired him to embrace the sport further.

Davis, despite his diagnosis and the impending chemotherapy treatments, has remained optimistic. He acknowledged the unwavering support from his family, the Chiefs' community, and fans, affirming his determination to return to the field stronger and healthier.

Rob Baxter, the Director of Rugby for the Exeter Chiefs, praised Davis for his proactive approach to his health, leading to an early diagnosis and immediate treatment. Baxter also highlighted the collective support from the club and its fans, underscoring the strength and popularity of Davis within the rugby community.

This story of bravery, solidarity, and community support underscores the profound impact of gestures, big and small, in the face of adversity. Nico Benson's initiative not only contributes financially to the fight against cancer but also serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for Aidon Davis and others in similar battles.
