In a significant move towards improving local infrastructure and reducing traffic congestion, the Devon County Cabinet has endorsed the submission of a Strategic Outline Case to the Department for Transport (DfT) for a new M5 junction and bridge at Cullompton. This submission comes after considerable public engagement, where nearly 900 residents voiced overwhelming support for the proposal.

The initiative aims to alleviate the persistent traffic bottlenecks at Junction 28 of the M5 by introducing a second bridge and junction south of Cullompton. This plan is complemented by a proposed Cullompton Relief Road stretching from Duke Street to Station Road, alongside enhancements to walking and cycling infrastructure. The public's response has been notably positive, with 92% in favour of the Town Centre Relief Road and 95% advocating for improvements to Junction 28. Additionally, approximately 80% supported the preferred option of a second bridge coupled with south-facing slip roads.

The new junction is expected to significantly ease peak-time congestion, which currently results in lengthy queues extending along Station Road, adversely affecting air quality and the quality of life for Cullompton residents. Moreover, this development is critical for the realization of Mid Devon District Council's strategic plans for housing and employment land at Culm Garden Village and North West Cullompton, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable growth and enhanced connectivity in the region.
