In 2023, over 3,000 individuals began chemotherapy or radiotherapy at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As these numbers grow, the need for emotional and practical support for patients is becoming more evident. CHEMOtivation, a newly established charity, aims to provide exactly that.

Founded in April 2024 by Marian Southwick in memory of her late husband Bob, CHEMOtivation delivers "Hope in a Tote" kits to those starting their cancer treatment. These bags contain essentials designed to help ease the physical and emotional burden of undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Bob, who battled pancreatic cancer, received a similar support pack from another charity, which inspired Marian to create something specifically for patients at the Royal Devon Hospital.

The charity's work has already been endorsed by the Matron of Cancer Services at Exeter Hospital, and they hope to expand their reach across West, Mid, and East Devon. Marian recalls her late husband’s determination to make a difference: "Bob vowed that if he was given more time, he would spend it helping others. CHEMOtivation is the result of that promise."

As the charity grows, CHEMOtivation is seeking support from the local community. Marian and her team are encouraging individuals and businesses in Cullompton and beyond to get involved by hosting fundraising events, sponsoring items for the "Hope in a Tote" packs, or offering other types of support. According to statistics, nearly half of us will face a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime, meaning many in the local community may benefit from the charity’s efforts either directly or through a loved one.

Marian believes the kindness of the community can make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients. "The journey through cancer treatment is indescribable. We hope to lift people’s spirits and give them some light during a very difficult time."
