Cullompton Town Council has launched its second public consultation concerning the state and future of play areas and street furniture within the parish boundaries. This initiative seeks to engage local residents in the decision-making processes that affect communal spaces and children's recreational facilities.
The town boasts more than 24 designated "play areas," defined as locations equipped with play facilities. These range from expansive parks to smaller sites hosting a single piece of play equipment. Currently, the council directly leases four of these areas: Culm Lea, Headweir Road, Rivermead, and Tufty Park, with Upcott Field being managed under a charitable trust.
A significant portion of these play areas is managed by the Mid Devon District Council (MDDC), which adheres to a policy of "managed decline." This approach involves the removal of play equipment that becomes unsafe or prohibitively expensive to repair, without plans for replacement. The Cullompton Town Council has indicated that there are no immediate plans to assume ownership or take over the management of additional play areas in the town.
The consultation serves as a critical platform for residents to voice their opinions on how these areas should be maintained, improved, or potentially expanded. Feedback from the community is essential, as it helps shape the priorities and actions of the local government concerning public spaces that directly impact family and community life.
Residents interested in participating in the consultation or viewing details about the play areas, including locations and photos, can find more information and access the feedback form through the council's official website or by visiting the local council office. Engaging in this consultation provides an opportunity for the community to influence the future landscape of Cullompton’s recreational spaces.
