A recent awards ceremony celebrated the outstanding achievements of police officers, staff, and volunteers from Exeter, East, and Mid Devon who have gone above and beyond to serve the community. Among those honoured were Sergeant Steve Mingo and Detective Constable Alex Powe, both of whom received Chief Superintendent Commendations and Superintendent’s Certificates for their exemplary service.

Sergeant Steve Mingo
Sergeant Steve Mingo, based in Honiton, played a key role in an investigation into the sale of stolen plant machinery in East Devon. His swift action in obtaining and executing a warrant led to the arrest of a suspect and the disruption of an organised crime group. The stolen machinery, which had been taken from various locations across the country, was successfully recovered and returned to its rightful owners.

In addition to his investigative work, Sergeant Mingo was recognised for his heroic actions at the scene of a serious road traffic collision outside Honiton police station. The crash left a driver trapped and severely injured. When the man stopped breathing, Sergeant Mingo’s calm and quick-thinking response saved his life. He coordinated with bystanders to preserve the scene and ensure evidence was secured.

Detective Constable Alex Powe
Detective Constable Alex Powe, based at Exeter police station, was commended for his diligent work on a complex rape investigation, which resulted in the offender receiving an eight-year prison sentence. DC Powe’s perseverance and dedication were further highlighted in another case, where he secured a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for a complex sexual abuse case. The detective’s thorough gathering of evidence, spanning more than 40 years, and his efforts to maintain the victim’s trust, led to a guilty plea from the offender.

These commendations recognise the incredible efforts of local officers who are dedicated to making the community safer.
