Major Fire Engulfs Derelict Building Near Exeter: Local Fire Brigades Respond

In a significant emergency response at 1.05am today, fire control units received multiple 999 calls alerting them to a blaze at a derelict property located just outside Exeter, near the village of Poltimore. Initial reports prompted the dispatch of two fire engines to the scene. As the situation escalated, based on further information from callers, a third engine was quickly mobilized to address the rapidly spreading fire.

Upon arrival, first responders encountered the abandoned building fully engulfed in flames. Recognizing the severity of the fire, command at the scene requested additional support, bringing the total to six fire engines. The operation was further bolstered by two Aerial Ladder Platforms and two Water Bowsers, with crews working tirelessly using multiple jets in an effort to contain and extinguish the fire.

The Cullompton fire brigade was among the several stations across Devon and Somerset that were called into action. Teams from Torquay, Danes Castle, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Sidmouth, Ivybridge, Middlemoor, and Bridgwater also joined the effort, showcasing the extensive coordination between the fire services to combat the blaze.

As of the latest update, the situation has been partially contained, allowing for a reduction in the on-scene presence to two fire engines and one Aerial Ladder Platform. The police are also on site, assisting with the incident and ensuring public safety.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and an investigation will likely follow once the area is deemed safe. The rapid response and teamwork displayed by the fire services have been commendable, with efforts focused on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby areas.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police are investigating a suspicious fire at Poltimore House in Devon. "The incident is being treated as a suspected arson and police are appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious around the time of the fire to contact them. Please contact police online or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference 50240083403".
