In a significant move toward enhancing accessibility, the Exe Valley Leisure Centre in Tiverton has recently unveiled its new Changing Places Toilet. This facility is the first of two specially designed accessible toilets planned for Mid Devon Leisure centres, with the second set to begin construction soon at the Culm Valley Sports Centre in Cullompton.
Last year, Mid Devon District Council successfully obtained over £150,000 in grant funding through the Changing Places fund, an initiative led by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The fund is dedicated to improving facilities for disabled people across the UK.
Changing Places toilets are designed to meet the needs of individuals with profound disabilities, providing equipment and space not found in standard accessible toilets. The newly installed facility at Exe Valley Leisure Centre features a range of essential amenities, including a rise and fall sink, a changing bench, a hoist, and ample space for carers, ensuring a safer and more dignified experience for users.
Councillor David Wulff, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure, expressed his enthusiasm about the project’s completion: “I’m delighted that we can celebrate the completion of the first of two accessible toilets at our leisure sites. I would like to say thank you to the MS Society who have provided valuable insight and advice on the best layout and design for these new facilities.”
The initiative not only aims to serve Mid Devon Leisure customers but also extends its benefits to residents and visitors in need of such facilities throughout the region. Upon completion of both sites, the facilities will be included on an online map to aid individuals in locating their nearest Changing Places Toilet.
