CULLOMPTON & TIVERTON – Residents of Cullompton and Tiverton are being invited to contribute their views on a draft Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), set to enhance active travel options in the area. This initiative, spearheaded by Devon County Council in collaboration with Mid Devon District Council, seeks to transform local travel by improving cycling and walking infrastructure.
Overview of the LCWIP
The LCWIP aims to address several key issues facing the region, including accommodating growth from new housing developments, supporting public health and wellbeing, enhancing accessibility to essential services, tackling the climate crisis, and boosting the local economy through increased trade for local businesses. The plan outlines potential key routes within Cullompton and Tiverton, extending to Tiverton Parkway, Uffculme, Willand, and Killerton.
Public Engagement and Consultation
From Monday 26 February through Sunday 7 April, the councils invite public feedback on the draft plan. This consultation period offers residents a chance to review detailed proposals and express their opinions on the future of local transportation.
A crucial element of the LCWIP is its focus on creating safe, attractive, and direct routes for cyclists and pedestrians, separate from motor traffic. These improvements range from new crossings, segregated cycle paths, public realm enhancements, traffic calming measures, and improved wayfinding.
How to Participate
Residents can participate in the consultation by completing an online survey or obtaining paper copies at local libraries in Cullompton, Tiverton, and Uffculme. Additionally, an online event scheduled for Monday 4 March, from 5pm to 6pm, and a drop-in session at Cullompton Town Hall on Monday 18 March, from 2pm to 5pm, offer further opportunities for engagement.
The Importance of LCWIPs
LCWIPs are mandated by the government to ensure local authorities strategically plan to improve walking and cycling infrastructure, reflecting the needs and aspirations of their communities. These plans are instrumental in securing future investment for the next 10-20 years in active travel infrastructure.
Next Steps
Following the consultation, feedback will be analysed and incorporated into the final LCWIP document, with publication expected later in the year. This plan represents a significant step towards creating a more sustainable, accessible, and healthy future for the residents of Cullompton and Tiverton.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation process and help shape the future of their community's cycling and walking infrastructure.
