After vacating the Lords Meadow Leisure Centre in Crediton where they had been stationed for several days, a group of travellers have now set up camp at the Culm Valley Sports Centre (CVSC) in Cullompton. This relocation has led to the temporary closure of the CVSC and has sparked a heated debate among local residents.
The Lords Meadow Leisure Centre in Crediton had faced significant disruptions due to the presence of over 12 caravans and various vehicles, leading to its closure on multiple occasions. The departure of the travellers on Sunday afternoon was a relief to many, but it also left behind a considerable mess including rubbish, leftover food, and other debris, complicating clean up efforts.
The CVSC announced the closure through a statement released Sunday evening, citing safety reasons for the abrupt decision. "We currently have visitors at Culm Valley & for safety reasons CVSC will be closed until further notice," the statement read, directing patrons to follow updates on social media.
The reaction among Cullompton residents has been mixed. While some on social media advocate for empathy and support for the travellers, others express frustration over the inconvenience and mess created, reflecting deeper community divisions. Comments range from supportive sentiments such as one from a local who mentioned, "Leave them be they are good people and hurt nobody," to frustrated outcries.
Concerns have also been raised about the impact on local transport and activities, with one resident commenting, "What about the buses? It’s going to be carnage!"
Local authorities and the management of CVSC are currently coordinating efforts to manage the situation and ensure the safety and cleanliness of the affected areas. Meanwhile, community leaders are calling for a balanced approach to address the needs of the travellers while considering the impact on local residents and services.
As the situation evolves, further updates from the Mid Devon District Council and local law enforcement are expected to shed light on the next steps for resolving the ongoing issue.
Stay tuned for further updates.
